Below are some answers to questions we are frequently asked: Why are their
still 4 coach trains on the Thurrock routes in the rush hour? Most of these
will be run as 8 coach from the May 2008 timetable
changes. Basically the 4 coach trains originate from Grays platform 3, which is
only 4 cars in length. These trains start in platform 3 as it avoids the need
for them to turn back in platform 2, and thus blocking the mainline whilst this
takes place. Platform 3 is currently being lengthened to 8 car length to allow
these improvements to take place. Why can't more trains stop at West Ham?
This is due to the signalling between Barking & Fenchurch Street. West Ham was
built just after the line was resignalled in the mid 1990's, and thus provision
was not made for the stopping of trains at West Ham. Network Rail have a program
to resignal the stretch between Barking & Limehouse. This is expected to be
complete for either the December 2009 or May 2010 timetable changes. Why can't
Thurrock stations be extended to 12 car length, like the via Laindon route?
The Network Rail route utilisation strategy and the Government HLOS (future rail
spending plans) indicate that Thurrock platforms should be extended from around
2012, with a corresponding increase in rolling stock. Outline plans suggest
Pitsea - Tilbury - Ockendon - Upminster will be the first route to receive 12
car platforms, with the Purfleet, Rainham and Dagenham Dock section following shortly
after. Updated 21/01/2008
