The increase in overcrowding of peak trains since 1996 has recently been
mentioned in the Press. These figures
below have been taken from official government statistics. Whilst TRUG are not
convinced that the PIxC (Passengers In eXcess of Capacity) calculations used in
these statistics, is as good a measure for the purpose as it should be, this
does confirm something we have known for a while, that c2c's trains are becoming
considerably more overcrowded. The recent scrapping of the Flexitime Season ticket,
which encouraged commuters to travel outside the peak hours, can only add to the
overcrowding as the incentive to travel outside the peak has been removed.
The following tables summarise the PXIC figures for the main London commuter
routes:
